In a world where demons infiltrate society by mimicking humans, Kayla Sylver is the Order’s most efficient weapon. Her blood grants her unnatural strength, reflexes, and insight into demonic auras—but also isolates her. The more she uses her gifts, the closer she feels to becoming what she hunts. While tracking a string of disappearances in a quiet coastal city, Kayla encounters a man who seems too gentle for this bleak world—but something about him feels familiar to Kayla’s darker instincts. When a demon attack exposes Kayla’s markings in front of the man, she flees—only for him to reveal that he, too, is not what he seems. He’s a demon—one who fled the underworld centuries ago to live a quiet, human life. Yet unlike the others, he shows no hunger for power or blood. Torn between duty and instinct, Kayla must decide if what she’s been taught all her life is truth—or just fear dressed as righteousness. As she begins to question the Order’s motives and the rigid definitions of good and evil, Kayla finds herself falling for the very being she’s supposed to destroy. But love comes at a cost. And when the Order discovers his identity, Kayla is forced to choose: Will she become the weapon they forged her to be? Or will she become something new—something forged from both bloodlines?

The idea of traveling the world always thrilled Kaela; her job allowed her to perform in a wide range of venues for celebrities and artists. Not this time around, no dancing on the horizon, but instead a mission from her mentor to check out the unknown disappearances in a coastal town. She arrived early in the morning, the sun was rising for the day, offering the beautiful opportunity to see the shimmering sea greet the sun. On the third level of the airport, Kaela gave herself a few moments to enjoy the view before heading downstairs to grab a cab.

"Over here!" Calling out as a white and green cab drove up to the curb, "Oh, thank you!" putting her bags into the trunk. Sliding into the backseat, she hands over a piece of paper with the Airbnb that the Order set her up in.

"Business or pleasure?" The driver questions as they pull out onto the road after putting the address in the GPS. "Business," Kaela answered, looking out the window with a smile. This place was beautiful. It didn't take Kaela long to notice the driver glaring at her through the rearview mirrors. She raised a brow, glancing over the drivers' arms and legs from where she could see from her position. A subtle flash of patterns coursed up the driver's neck, revealing she was a demon. Kaela waited until they came to a stop sign to swing out her sword, which only came about when Kaela felt threatened.

"Be gone, demon!" She shouts, missing the demon's neck by a hair as they dashed out of the car. Kaela leaps out the window, landing on top of the car before launching after the demon. "You must be the reason people are disappearing!" Kaela yells as she follows the demon through the town until cornering them in an alley. "Got ya!" rushing forward to pin the demon against the walls. "Tell me, are there more of you hiding around her?" she questions. The demon refused, even thrusting itself into Kaela's sword to return to the demon realm.

"Dammit!" anger filling her chest, her patterns scattering along her arms for a moment, a blip of time as she settled herself back. Her sword disappears as she leans against the walls guessing that there were more since the demon did not wish to talk

Gavyn again walked through the same door he had a million times it seemed. For being so old, something as simple as a door bell ringing the moment he pushed open a door never seemed to get boring to him. He had been around the area for quite some time- and had quietly ‘dissolved’ into human life here. He never was one for confrontation, and he had only ended up the way he did because he had been so desperate al those years ago. He was starving, poor, and homeless. He had wanted to live a better life.

Gwi-ma, the demon king had enticed him, - promising him only riches a poor man could dream of- and from there on, he had been his obedient servant. Up until 20 years ago…

Gavyn never liked doing anything for Gwi-ma, collecting souls for the king was never something he had dreamt of being a part of. It disgusted him that he had been so weak, that he had sold his only thing he had left, a soul. And although practically soulless, Gavyn wasn’t a monster.

But his quiet life would soon come to an end.

He heard commotion down the alley way, and he could instantly hear the sounds that seemed to be belonging to a huntress.

Shit

Although he hadn’t been stealing souls in forever— he still worried.

Would the huntress spot him?

Would he be in trouble? He had finally gotten Gwi-ma’s influence to quieten down, and he knew he didn’t want to go back. But the blade that belonged to that huntress could only mean one thing— sending him back to the demon realm.

And he didn’t want to meet her. If he did come across her, he would have to appear unassuming, and he hoped that his plan wouldn’t back fire.

Hoped.

Name: Gavyn
Age: permanently 28
Appearance:

Background: originally a commoner in a high ranking society. His luck had turned sour once his family had succumbed to a plague and he was left on the streets. His influence from Gwi-ma the demon king didn’t come later until he knew he had nothing left to lose. But nothing in this world is free, and he had to pay for it with his soul, and become a demon after he eventually died.
Family: deceased
Likes/dislikes: suppressed his memories and doesn’t really have much interest in a lot of things anymore. He runs a small antique shop but that’s about it.

Kayla was able to quiet herself down after a few minutes, well, no way would she risk a cab after that interaction. Sometimes, demons did arrive in groups since humans are known for remaining near friends and family. She clicks her tongue, letting out a sigh, pushing off the wall to exit the alleyway and hopefully find her way to this Airbnb. Her trust in this area was quite low, which was no reflection on the people here; it was a beautiful town, and its low crime rate was probably why demons went under the radar for so long. But someone slipped up, letting a demon through that was too hungry for souls.

Now on the sidewalk, Kayla takes a look around; she is completely lost in the middle of downtown. Turning left, she took out her phone, typing in the address to find it was about a fifteen-minute walk from where she was. After flying halfway around the world to meet a demon, the moment she stepped out of the airport left she was exhausted. She took a seat at a bench for a quick rest before heading to her new home for the time being. It was a few seconds until her senses began to pick up on hints of darkness, and she glanced around on alert. Only for a dog to jump out of a bush, startling her to leap off her bench and stumble to the side.

When she stumbled to the side she would be met with someone bumping up into her and going, “Hey! Watch where you’re going, you could seriously end up hurt—“ Gavyn had suddenly been startled just as much as the woman who had stumbled into him. A local stray he had been feeding outside of his antique shop was being more of a handful more than usual. But Gavyn wasn’t expecting the stray to startle a human like that.

He had paused talking the moment he had laid eyes on the woman and…didn’t know what to say next. As mentioned before, Gavyn lived a quiet life, so a person such as Kayla disrupting that peace all of a sudden was new, and he usually didn’t have any interaction with many humans.

Clearing his throat he stepped back and looked away from her. “Anyways, just…be more observant if you’re going to be easily startled like that,” he says and turned on his heel to go back into his shop, the door ringing when he opened it and it closed behind him as he went back to counter.

Her path was diverted from the sidewalk to an opposing bush, where leaves got in her hair and on her clothes as she found her footing, brushing her hands to rid herself of the leaves. This has been a frustrating start to the trip so far. She glared at the man and the stray that further ruined her day, but she took a deep breath. "Apologies, been a very long day," she explains her reasoning for spooking so easily, a dog was the last thing she expected to just show up at her today. At least she did not have her sword out, or it would have been sent down to hell with one swipe. But her explanation had no audience as the man she bumped into simply continued his way into his establishment, a bit rude.

Kayla takes her phone to realize it was cracked to death and glitching like crazy. She looked at the building and followed after him, the ringing bell catching her attention for a moment as she entered. "Do you mind helping me?" she asked him. he must be a long-time local with his shop on the main street of the town. "My phone is broken and I need to get to this address," showing him the piece of paper if he cared to give her the time of day.

When she had walked in, she would see Gavyn turning with boxes in his hands. He glanced down at the piece of paper before glancing back up towards Kayla’s face. “Take a left out of this shop, down the street and immediately on your right- that’s where this place is.” She would hear him speak. But he didn’t tell her that nothing would be there.

Well, giving a fake address to a huntress wasn’t all that uncommon, especially if she was going to be ambushed. He didn’t think too much of it and he moved through some beaded curtains towards the back, setting the boxes down before he came back out and realized she was still there. He looked at her phone and then sighed, “not much luck then, huh?” He asked, his peculiar eyes looking up on her face now.

So much for small-town hospitality, she crumbles the paper in her hand, crossing her arms while she waits for him to walk into the back with his boxes. No way would he so easily know this address without thinking about it for a moment, plus she knew it was at least a fifteen-minute walk, his directions would take five minutes. She leans against the counter, awaiting his return either for an apology or to get the real directions so she can finally get some rest. "Seems luck is not on my side today," she admits, blaming her demon side for that. "Listen, I just need some real direction to this address or the nearest phone store," she requests, this time giving him options of lightly helping her or diving in and showing her the way to her home away from home.

Kayla glanced around his shop, hints of darkness lurked in a few corners, not surprising since she deemed this town overrun with demons if one so openly picked her up from the airport. They probably thought she was some newbie due to her age, but she has been in his business since she was a child, born into it. Finally, her gaze landed on him, noting his eyes, resulting in the narrowing of hers. She did not get a good look at him earlier, but now she could see something was off about him.

Gavyn realized that she had caught on, and…he knew the town had been expecting a huntress, but didn’t expect one to be so young. The others had plans to ambush her- not him. He was simply one to direct her into the oncoming ambush.

Somehow, he always seemed to be still working for Gwi-ma, no matter how much his life had ‘quieted down’, he knew the demon lord’s presence was still reaching to him somehow, even if he had learned to mostly ignore it.

He then gave a soft sigh and looked around the glass cases. He went over to one and dug up an old iPhone 11. Sure, it wasn’t the newest technology out there at this time, but it would power up and work for what she needed it to. He even had the decency to lend her a charger.

“Fine, you can have it,” he says and set the phone in front of her. “Should have enough power to get you where you need.” He explained and looked out towards the street. “But…it’s dangerous to go out right now. I have a place above this shop you can crash at for the night, if you’d like.”

Wait.

Why would he be offering this to a hunter of all things? Was it because he secretly deep down wanted her help in something? Or was it because he hoped she’d spare him if he actually did try to help her. He could tell something was bothering her, but he couldn’t place his thoughts on what. And maybe he wanted to find out.

His response took her by surprise, no longer assessing his appearance, instead focused on the device he set into her hands with a charger. Kayla raised a brow; politeness was a rarity in her work. Respect was always earned. Yes, she was a bit forceful in her help, but this was a bit over the top. Long-pressing the power button, she watches the screen light up with a red circle and a dead battery signal, drawing her to sigh. She could find a cafe to charge it. Possibly have something to eat while she waits.

Kayla turns to head out the door when he suggests it may be dangerous right now, red alarms and questions sparked in her head. She looks back at him, then up at the ceiling. He was a strange one, but he was not a creep and seemed genuine in his offer. It did make her wonder what he meant by dangerous. "Okay, I know you are a stranger, but you don't look like a creep, so I would like to take you up on your offer," she answers. Would this become a mistake? She would set a trap at the door and have her sword on the ready.

He couldn’t help but laugh at her words. “If I were a creep I’d think I’d follow you out of this store,” he said nonchalantly, shaking his head and giving her a slight smirk. She obviously was very cautious but he knew he wouldn’t bring her any harm if she stayed here.

Yet he knew the others would be able to sniff her out in a ten mile radius— if he wasn’t careful. Perhaps he would send them on a wild hunter chase and go from there. “There’s a spare bedroom located on the right at the top of the stairs. You can use the bathroom too if needed.” He said, turning to go put some files away. “I don’t close for another hour so I’ll be down here,” he explained, moving to his own phone. He unlocked the screen and was tapping on it. “Care for some take out?”

He only asked because he felt bad about her situation. She was just a human being and he didn’t know if he could potentially make up for the ambush he would have sent her into.

Flickering her gaze toward the stairs, she hummed, beginning to click a few things. Was it possible he was an agent from the Order who was here as a local? On a mission of simply keeping an eye on her. She did not need a babysitter, plus there was already an Airbnb waiting for her, which he probably knew, so something must be wrong for him to suggest remaining here for just one night. Dragging her suitcase behind her, she makes her way toward the stairs when she hears a mention of takeout, the words connecting to food, which made her stomach grumble in remembrance of her starving.

"Yeah, sure, I am down for whatever, just let me know what I owe you," she answers, walking up the stairs, turning right to enter her temporary room for the night. She slides her suitcase to lie at the end of the bed, plugs in the phone, then pulls out some sweats and a t-shirt, along with a towel, before making her way to the bathroom. A quick shower to wash off the airplane and relax a little, she wraps herself in a towel once she shuts off the water.

Walking back into the room, she was quick to text a number she knew by heart, letting them know her phone was broken and this was a new one. She drops the towel at her feet, getting dressed for the night and braiding her hair loosely. Another grumble from her stomach, and she glanced toward the door, wondering if food had arrived yet.

Soon enough, there was a knock on the door. “Food’s arrived,” Gavyn’s muffled voice could be heard. “It’s Chinese take out, hope you don’t have a peanut allergy.” He commented, leaving the food by the door. “I also got a soda for you,” he mentioned as he walked away to his room for the time being.

He had finally closed shop, albeit a little early. He was just too tired to remain open for another 30 minutes. Flopping on the bed he looked up at the ceiling. What…was he doing?

Having a hunter in his home was bad news. Especially if she found out about him, it would spell trouble. But not like he was any different than her- all the hunters sent their way had been misled by him. Maybe just this once he wouldn’t…

No.

He knew that no matter what- these patterns that marked him as a demon, Gwi-ma always made sure to have control, no matter what. The demon king would always find a way.

Gavyn groaned softly and finally sat up to eat his food. His door to his room was partially open, and it wasn’t too far from Kayla. He’d be able to see when she would open up her door to grab the food.

Just when the thought crossed her mind, there was his voice, reassuring, food arrived, and was set by her door for her to retrieve. She smiled a little, hearing there were nuts in the food, she was grateful not to have allergies. Wearing a long night shirt, nothing else, Kayla opens the door, her gaze focusing on the food on the floor before realizing he had closed up for the night. Cautiously, she picked up the food, peeking inside for the smell to engulf her senses. "Thanks!" she called out with a smile. She closed the door, taking a seat on the bed before chowing down, felt like forever since she had a meal. It then dawned on her that she needed to pay him back for the meal.

Kayla did not take down to wolf down the meal, wiping her mouth with a napkin, she took out her wallet to fetch some cash. Opening her door again she lightly walks over to his door, leaning down to set the cash on the floor encase he was asleep. Something out of the corner of her eye made her straighten up, alert all of a sudden, turning around, she had her back to Gavyns door, searching the darkness for the threat. She hated to say it, but his building felt off; something dark was here. No need to spook a simple human, though, so she would keep it to herself.

Gavyn had watched Kayla come out of her room after some time and walk towards where his door was. He remained ever so silent and was actually holding his breath the entire time. He noticed she had leant down and placed something by his door. It was only when something spooked her did she leave and retreat back into her room.

He gave a soft sigh and moved over to the door, peeking out and grabbing the cash. Then he looked up. A familiar looking cat was sitting there, the blue fur sticking out like a sore thumb. It was smaller than it used to be, but it still was the spirit of the tiger that had accompanied him all those years ago.

“You probably spooked her,” he mentioned softly, reaching out to pet the feline, feeling its purrs while giving it some chin scratches. “You better not let her see you,” he murmured out as he stood and let the cat come into his bedroom as he closed the door.

“I don’t know why she’s here, but I know that she can’t stay here,” he would have to send her back wherever she came from. Knowing that if she remained here he would have no other choice but to lure her into their trap. This island was full of demons, and having a hunter like her here meant she would be perfect fuel for Gwi-ma.

“Shit…” he cursed softly and sat back on the bed, the cat had then jumped up and moved to his lap, purring loudly and making biscuits with its paws on his leg. Looking down, Gavyn asked the cat, “what should I do?” But he knew the cat wouldn’t give him an answer.

Finding that there was nothing, her nerves getting the best of her, she let out a sigh and made her way back to her room, closing the door behind her softly. Kayla slumped down on the bed after shutting off the lights. She needed sleep, but her mind was buzzing with questions and observations she had made so far. Why did that demon attack her out in the open? Why did this area feel dense with darkness? And why in the world was the shopkeeper here turn on a dime after being so cold toward her at first?

Kayla exhales a breath, turning onto her side. This mission was far from over, and she had no intel as to how the demons were even getting through. Tomorrow's check-in was going to suck. She forces her eyes closed as she pulls the blanket over her head, making up dreams until she falls asleep.

The following morning, Kayla was still asleep, a ball underneath the sheets, while her phone kept blowing up. She had three different numbers attempting to reach her. Of course, it was all in code, just in case she was in enemy territory and got herself captured. Nope. Just sleeping off the jet lag.

Gavyn could hardly sleep throughout the night, his dreams full of nightmares and the feeling of Gwi-ma shadowing over him still. He knew that he was cold at first to the hunter, but then now that he was actually nice to her- and for what? To gain something from it? As if.

Either way, if she was smart, she’d probably picked up on his change of attitude. But he knew he would have to play it off at some point.

Sighing as he remained in bed for the time being, Gavyn stared up at the ceiling. He knew once she walked out of those doors to his shop, he could not stop what would be coming to her eventually. She was one hunter, missing the other two. She would have a near impossible time escaping, if she even could.

For Kayla, that sense of darkness was pushed away for a moment, like it was almost suspended. Then she would feel the presence of something in the room with her. The feeling of…paws?

Something was pawing at her while she was underneath the bedsheets. And it was meowing, as if begging for attention. What she wouldn’t be expecting would see a Russian blue cat, long sleek fur and intense green eyes. But the fur of the cat seemed a little bit too blue, if one was paying attention to it.

A weight was added to the bottom of the bed, never hearing the door open, nor footsteps into the room, but she was not alone anymore. She groans softly as her sheets are tugged at to allow the intruder to see her face. Kayla whines when the sun strikes her face, rubbing her eyes open, her brain still in a fog, as her gaze lands on her roommate. She was dumbfounded, a cat, a blue cat, some rare breed she must assume. A glance toward the door, it was still closed, locked as well, her gaze shifted to the window where a gap just big enough for the feline to wander in remained open. Sitting up with a stretch, she reaches out to gently pat the cat, "good morning to you as well," she giggles with a smile, always holding a fondness for animals. "Now, where do you come from?" she questions, gathering from the feline's appearance that they were well cared for.

Another buzz sounded from the phone, drawing Kayla's attention. Her body stiffened just before she raced to the device, opening all the messages. Only sending one to her supervisor, who would relay the message to others that all was fine, she was not kidnapped or in trouble, and there was a detour in the plans. After that, she set the phone to silent, not wanting to ruin her morning any further. But the Order would not be happy; she was behind on getting them answers as to what was going on in this town. Her gaze returned to the cat. "Any idea of where I can get a decent breakfast?" she asks in a joking manner, not expecting an answer.

The cat had this…peculiar look on its face, but either way, it could be just the trick of the light. It tilted its head as it was pet by the huntress, and started to purr. The feline then went and started to make bread on the blanket and flicked an ear as Kayla got up and was asking it about breakfast.

It meowed at her in reply, as if saying it didn’t know exactly what she meant— or maybe it did. The cat then moved and jumped off of the bed, heading towards the locked door and began scratching out it, yowling a little towards Kayla to show it wanted out.

That’s when Kayla would smell the waft of breakfast being made. It was the scent of her favorite breakfast food, and the sounds of glasses and kitchenware clinking out there could also be heard.

Gavyn was making breakfast and currently was fixing the food for his cat, knowing that he would want to be fed soon. He then glanced back towards the door Kayla was behind, wondering if she would come out and join.

The least he could do was offer her some food for the ‘journey’ ahead. Doubt he would see her again. He hoped she would be smart enough and leave this island, but knowing hunters, they never left until all the demons were sent back to the demon realm.

A knowing look was given to the open window, but she shrugged it off as she opened the bedroom door for the cat to exit, only to realize she needed to get dressed before even thinking of heading out for breakfast. She kept the door cracked, pulling on some cargo pants, a crop top, and a light zip-up. Kayla grabs her sneakers and bag before finally leaving the room to return and make the bed. Walking down the hall, she sniffs the air, the smell of food leading her into the kitchen.

"Oh!" she gasps, forgetting she was in a man's home, "um..." clearing her throat, "good morning," greeting him awkwardly. She glances around for the blue, hoping she is not imagining the blue feline. "Thank you again for everything," she spoke with a smile, sensing the darkness in the building had vanished. Maybe she was just on edge last night after such a stressful day.

Gavyn heard her door open and he only turned when she had approached the kitchen. She would see the cat’s bowl in his hands as he turned to greet her. “Good morning,” he replied and walked over to a mat that had a matching cat bowl full of water. He bent down and placed the bowl of food on the mat and the cat from before hurriedly went to eat, as if it hadn’t been fed in ages. He sighed and just shook his head at it.

He then turned his attention back towards Kayla. “No worries, I understand how it can be at night so it’s better to be safe,” he nonchalantly mentioned, not being aware of how he had worded the sentence. “Would you like some food before you go?” He offered, wondering if she would accept.

Unaware of how her eyes lit up when spotting the feline, she smiled a little to realize it belonged to him and he must care for it, though it ate like in a frenzy. A few moments of staring, unable to comprehend a breed of cat with such a pretty coloring, no way he rescued it, must be pure-bred. Finally, she lifts her gaze from the feline to the fellow human in the room, a slightly confused expression when he mentioned the night, but the redirection to food distracted her.

"Oh yes, any chance you have coffee?" she requests, stepping further into the kitchen. "If not, that is fine, I can be sure there is a cafe I can..." she trails off, seeing the meal he prepared. "You a cook?" she asks, taking a seat at the counter as her eyes ate up the breakfast he made.

He noticed the way her voice trailed off as she noticed the food. He gave a soft smirk and nodded to her. “Kind of. I usually prepare most of my food for the week, so I always make large batches.” He mentioned to her now, leaning back on his heels ever so slightly. “You can have whatever, it’s the least I could do,” he tells her now, wondering if she would.

It was the least he could do. He knew she would run into so much trouble once leaving his little ‘safe’ zone. He knew although he did most of the dirty work for running hunters into the other demons, he felt as if he should prolong hers by any means necessary.

Going from cold to annoyed, then being a caring host, Kayla felt the whiplash of emotions but was appreciative of his hospitality. She takes note of the large batch of food, and it's easier to go ahead and make it for a week than cook every single meal individually. Finding herself a plate and fork, she dishes up a portion of scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns before making herself comfortable at the small table along the back wall of the kitchen. "This is delicious!" she comments after taking a few bites with a delighted hum. "How about as payment, I clean this up for ya," she suggests, already debating about grabbing herself a second plate.

Kayla was grateful she was not thrown back onto the street to wander her way for breakfast and coffee before at last arriving at her Airbnb, which was unknowingly being used as an ambush upon her. She technically checked in with The Order to reassure them she was fine, but explaining how she got turned around and broke her phone will be difficult to explain. Most likely, they will send her mentor out here to help calm the situation and guide her, or even worse, take over the mission. These thoughts led her to pause eating, stirring her fork around on her plate, a frown on her face.

Gavyn knew that his sudden change in actions would be confusing to her at first, as he knew it was confusing to him as well. At first, he was just here to meant to help himself. The more hunters he turned in the more the voices stopped, simple as that. The voices influenced by gwi-ma, that is.

But somehow, with Kayla in his general vicinity, Gavyn felt as if the darkness surrounding him was being pushed away. He didn’t understand why, but something else in him told him to keep delaying the ambush. But he also knew that if he did delay it, the other demons would come to where he lived and start questioning why he hasn’t sent the huntress their way yet.

When she said that she would help clean up as payment he shrugged and looked around. “If you’d like, I’m not going to force you into anything,” he tells her next. When she left this place, whatever happened to her would be out of his control. And when she eventually learned of his partake in sending her into that ambush, sure enough, this cordial setting between them would be no more.
