On the outskirts of the small village of Mournstead lies a beautiful, two-story tavern of gothic make. The tavern is known for opening its doors only at night and is run by a strange but charming man that goes by the name Malakai Grimwood. There are many rumors whispered around the village about Mister Grimwood, some believing him to be a fiend, and many other wild accusations that are never brought up to him directly due to the fear that surrounds his name. All of that said, it is the only tavern that resides in -or rather near - the village, which often draws adventurers and travelling merchants into its walls. The tavern is open to all brave enough to step inside. One question remains: do you dare enter?

(OOC: this world is inspired by the forgotten realms, so feel free to play races and even classes from d&d if you want! though, it is absolutely not required to know the lore of the forgotten realms in order to participate! this is just for anyone who wants to roleplay within the tavern and maybe even get to know malakai and discover his secrets! people are also totally welcome to rp interactions between them and other characters within the tavern; just all the happenings within! i suppose we shall see where the story leads us! the description of what you will see when you enter the tavern will be just below this. have fun!)

The first thing that you notice upon entering the tavern is the scent of baked goods and coffee. To the right of you are many rounded, wooden tables with empty chairs. You hear the crackling of the fire to the right and can feel the comfortable warmth that emits from it, chasing off the cold of the night air. There are cushions on the ground around the fireplace, along with a large pot filled with spiced tea that sits above the fire itself. A large, black light fixture with beautiful swirling designs hangs above you, giving warm lighting to anything in the tavern that isn't already lit by the fire. At the other end of the room, directly across the door, is a bar with a couple of stools in which the owner of the tavern stands behind with a warm smile. He is a pale man with smooth skin and dark eyes. His black hair is pulled up into a half ponytail which allows you to see many different ear piercings. Just underneath his sleeves, you catch a glimpse of what looks to be tattoos of snakes and vines. Behind him sits a set of stairs that leads up and out of sight. He speaks with a light Irish accent, welcoming you into his tavern.

"Welcome to The Whispering Serpent, my friend; a place meant for anyone and everyone, where the lost and shunned may find shelter. Can I get ya somethin' to drink?"

"Save the flattery," a bored voice rang out from underneath a cloak. Two furry hands reached up, pulling the hood down to reveal a somewhat flat feline face. The tall cat-like humanoid strode into the tavern confidentially, shrugging off the extra layer in annoyance.

"Fucking rain," the tabaxi muttered to himself, though he knew that his friend's keen hearing most likely picked it up anyways. "Soaks through my damned coat if I don't cover up. Do you know how long it takes for my fur to dry?"

Malakai chuckled. "Well if it isn't my favorite asshole. What can I do ya for, Viggo?"

Viggo simply raised up his hand, flipping the man behind the bar off, before plopping down on a cushion next to the fire. Relief washed over his face as the heat soaked in. The scars that covered his muscular arms reflected in the warm glow, and without the cloak, the rest of his mostly plain outfit could now be seen. He wore a simple, off-white, sleeveless shirt, and a pair of light brown trousers. What stood out the most were his golden piercings that matched the color of his eyes. They started at his septum, and he had many more adorning his pointed ears.

Malakai had already begun to brew a cup of black coffee, which caused Viggo's nose to twitch in delight. He began speaking, but he didn't bother to open his eyes.

"What's the word around town, Grimwood?"

"Hm… well, the latest stories have me stealin' away children in the night and baking them into pies," Malakai replied, amusement clear in his tone.

"Hah! Points for creativity, I suppose. So, the fiend theory's off the table?"

Malakai chuckled. "Now, now, that would be too generous, wouldn't it? Don't fret, there's always room for both."

The strange man finished making the coffee, and brought it over to Viggo. The Tabaxi's eyes opened up, glinting with excitement, as he snatched the mug out of Malakai's hands and took a large gulp of the steaming liquid. Malakai smiled, and gracefully took a seat across from Viggo as he continued to sip away at his warm drink.

"Hm… what other news do I have? Ah, Ves stopped in about two nights ago," Malakai commented, staring at the fire, the light reflecting in his dark eyes. Viggo rolled his eyes at the mention of Ves.

"Oh? And how did that go?"

"We had a pleasant evenin'. They pressed me, as they always do. 'Come on Kai,'" he began to do a silly impression of the one they called Ves. "'I won't tell anyone… just tell me what it is about you… tell me that secret you're hiding. I'll even give you one in return!'"

Viggo snorted. "Uh huh, like they don't keep all their secrets out in the open already. That elf couldn't keep a secret for the life of her. So, what did you tell them?"

"What I always tell them. Where would be the fun in that? I do that, and I lose all the mystery surroundin' my name."

"Good answer," Viggo replied. "Plus, why is she so interested? Way I see it, the less I know about you the better. Plausible deniability."

"This is exactly why we get along so well, my friend," Malakai smirked, and stood back up. "More coffee?"

"Please," Viggo held out his empty mug, Malakai taking it and heading back behind the bar area.

"Comin' right up."
